Bury’s Stray Cat Fund relies solely on donations but giving money or goods isn’t the only way to help us!  If you live locally, have some free time and like cats there are many other ways you could help which are detailed below.  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions, we’d love to hear from you!  Please call the Sanctuary on 01284 388455 and speak to Sarah.

To enable them to live happy and fulfilling lives in later years, some older cats are available under our fostering scheme – we cover vet bills (some exclusions apply) and you provide general care, a fireside, armchair and TLC. The cat lives with you but because they remain our responsibility, we can only foster within a maximum 15 miles radius of Bury St. Edmunds.  Foster cats must visit designated vets in Bury St. Edmunds, Newmarket, Haverhill or Long Melford.

Hand-rearing Kittens

We are looking for people to hand rear orphan kittens.  New-born kittens need to be fed every 2 hours day and night for the first couple of weeks.  Slightly older kittens up to 4 or 5 weeks old are fed every 4 hours and do not need an overnight feed.  Orphan kittens are brought to us at any age.  We will supply training, milk and equipment.

More helpers are required at the sanctuary to look after the cats, clean pens etc.  If you can help we would love to hear from you particularly if you have spare time at weekends.

Some of our cats are very nervous when they are brought into the sanctuary and require time spent with them to get used to their new surroundings.  Other cats just love attention and can’t get enough of it!  With so much to do at the Sanctuary to keep it running, we can’t always give every cat the attention they crave or need so If you fancy just sitting in a pen with a cup of tea and a cat on your lap for a while we can provide the tea and cat if you can provide the time and lap!  We would especially like to hear from you if you have experience in taming feral cats.  Please get in touch if you are interested!

We regularly have stalls at local events so if you can help man a stall, provide items for sale (cakes, bric-a-brac, other craft items etc) or collecting items please get in touch.  We are also looking for people to organise and run fundraising events (e.g. a coffee morning).

We require people to help with transporting cats between the sanctuary, our vets, or from outlying towns and villages.

Home Checks

Help by carrying out home checks in your area.

We always have a list of general maintenance that needs to be done around the Sanctuary ranging from gardening, painting and carpentry (to name a few!).
